Location not updating as programmed

Recommended Posts

Set my target phone to update it's location every 40 minutes or 5 events, whichever comes first. Well For the last 12 hours, the target phone updated it's location 8 times as follows:

04/10/10 06:15:56 04/10/10 06:29:37

2 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 05:16:49 04/10/10 06:29:37

3 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 04:16:41 04/10/10 04:29:36

4 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 03:36:42 04/10/10 04:29:36

5 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 01:56:41 04/10/10 02:29:47

6 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 01:36:41 04/10/10 02:29:47

7 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 00:56:41 04/10/10 01:29:45

8 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 00:16:34 04/10/10 00:29:43

and has not updated it's position in the last 6 hours even when I select the refresh button on the events screen it doesn't show any update.

SMS are the same, it doesn't capture all the SMS.

Have you tried sending the remote SMS command to turn off GPS and then waiting 10 minutes before you turn it on again and then seeing if it captures again?

Set my target phone to update it's location every 40 minutes or 5 events, whichever comes first.

From page 14 of the manual:

"Delivery period and Max number of events are an either/or setting. It is whichever of these settings happens first."

The GPS tracking frequency is a separate setting, but the delivery period and max number of events control how often the updates to the web account occur.

What delivery period setting (page 13 of manual) are you using (1-24 hours)?

It will take 3 hours 20 minutes (200 minutes total) to generate 5 location events if gps frequency is set to 40 minutes. So if there were no other events and delivery period was greater than 3 hours 20 minutes you wouldn't expect an update before that time period.

Tivo007 is correct, you will only get the 5 reports as stated.

Tivo007 is absolutely correct. In fact, you CANNOT set the LOCATION to report every 40 minutes or every 5 events, whichever comes first. That is the setting for the REPORT TIMER schedule (for ALL captured events). The GPS setting allows you to set how often it should try to get a location (per every X minutes), and then all of these are reported along with all other captured events (SMS, Call Logs, etc.) at the same time, according the the Report Timer settings.

If you have ONLY set the report timer for every 40 minutes / 5 events, then you won't get any GPS/Location events. If you set the GPS to every 10 minutes but the Report Timer is set to once every 2 hours / 500 events, then it will probably take 2 hours to get the last 4 GPS locations (1 per each 40 minutes, with reporting every 2 hours - unless 500 miscellaneous events all get captured first).

Make sure you set the Report Timer and Location settings independently, and if you want to receive GPS in real time then set the Report Timer to every X minutes and every *1* event. Then you'll get the GPS locations reported immediately, according to whatever GPS setting you've made.

Can you clarify the point above? specifically where you write "set the Report Timer to every X minutes". On page 13 of the manual under Event Reporting | Delivery Period it reads:

"This option enables you to select the interval time the Target phone will send data to your web account from every 1 to 24 hours."

Isn't the value set in this field in HO URS and not minutes? Or is there a way to change the units from hours to minutes?

Is the minimum setting for this field "1"? which translates to 1 hour or 60 minutes?

Or is there a way to set it for less than 1 hour / 60 minutes?

For example, is it possible to enter a value of ".5" which would be 1/2 hour or 30 minutes?

In the original posters log there is a 1 hour 40 minute stretch for which no location event was generated:

4 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 03:36:42 04/10/10 04:29:36

5 LOCATION Map 04/10/10 01:56:41 04/10/10 02:29:47

So if for some reason the phone wasn't generating location events for a long stretch (such as 1 hour 40 minutes), then even if you had max number of events set to 1 and delivery period set to 1, you still wouldn't get a web account update until an event records, correct? In other words, if delivery period is set to 1 hour and there are no events during that hour, then nothing updates to the web account, right? Or is there an empty update done at the 1 hour mark showing no events posted? If it's the latter, then that would signal you that the phone is reporting and updating properly but not acquiring location positions for some reason. Couldn't that happen if the phone user disables both gps and access to wireless services location? In the original posters case, if the gps frequency was set to 40 minutes, what else could explain the 1 hour 40 min gap between location events besides the phone being off or all location services being off? (Unless the user crossed a time zone to 1 hour ahead I guess is another scenario where the phone's clock would auto adjust ahead 1 hour) Thanks.

EDIT: to correct 1 hour 40 minute gap and add time zone change scenario

You are correct. If not events are captured in one hour then nothing is sent to the web account. The only reason that there is a delay in events is if, as said, the TARGET phone is turned off or GPS is disabled or wi-fi (or whatever system the phone uses to connect to the internet) is disabled also.
